Product Details

  • Adenia glauca, also known as Elephant's Foot, is a rare caudiciform succulent that forms a hairless green caudex (i.e., a fat trunk), which grows fatter as it reaches maturity. The base of the cylindrical caudex can grow up to 3.3 feet (1 m) wide with vine of up to 10 feet (3 m). Its leaves are pale grayish-green with rounded margins and shed annually. Adenia glauca has the most leaves during the warm season, which is also its growing season.

Inconspicuous cream flowers appear in early spring. Adenia glauca are either male or female plants.

The sap of Adenias is poisonous, so do not ingest and be extra careful when pruning or handling them to avoid skin irritation or allergic reaction.

Plants may be shipped bare root.
  • It is ideal to expose the leaves to bright light while keeping the caudex in the shade.

Water thoroughly only when soil is dry to the touch and let drain completely, especially if you live in areas with high humidity. Otherwise, Adenia glauca can be watered regularly. Reduce watering in cold winter when the plant goes dormant.

    Porous, fast draining soil.

Protect from frost in cold winter. Temperatures above 50°F (10°C) are optimal.

Propagate by seeds. One male Adenia and one female Adenia are needed to produce seeds.
  • USDA Zone 11: above 4.5 °C (40 °F)
    USDA Zone 12: above 10 °C (50 °F)
